How to Prepare for Black Loong
Like other Loong bosses, the Black Loong uses a lightning attack that inflicts the Shock status, making you more vulnerable to further damage. This means that avoiding the Shock status is crucial for your survival.
First, you must upgrade your gourd to cure shock if the Black Loong inflicts it on you. You can adjust the drinks and soaks you use to heal status conditions, though this might cost less overall health restoration. Alternatively, you can use shock-calming powder to eliminate shock if applied. Additionally, you can talk to the NPC Xu Dog, who will help you craft the medicine needed to prepare for the boss fight.

How to Get the Loong Scale
Head to the First Prince of Flowing Sand’s Boss Arena in Sandgate Village to find the Loong Scales. Enter the cave beside the Valley of Despair Keeper’s Shrine, and after defeating the First Prince, your next objective is to locate the Loong Scales.
The Loong Scales appear in Chapter 2. If you’re lucky, you might crash into the arena wall during the fight, creating a crack through which you can slip to collect the scales. Unlock the Red Loong Boss fight, progress through the first region of Chapter 2. After facing the Yaoguai Chief, Rat King, and the Second Rat Prince, head down the left-hand path to fight the First Rat Prince inside a cave.
On the left side of the First Rat Prince area is a Clay Wall you’ll need to break. Here’s how:
- Get the First Rat Prince to attack the wall.
- Then, have the Wandering Wight Spirit attack the wall.
- Finally, use the Azure Dust Form’s slam attack on the wall (Azure Dust is obtained by completing the Man-In-Stone questline).
Once the wall is cracked, interact with it to squeeze into a small secret room. Inside this room, you’ll find a chest containing the Loong Scale. With the Loong Scale, you can unlock secret areas throughout the game, including the Chapter 1 area housing the Red Loong Boss.
How to Find the Red Loong
The Red Loong is inside a secret area adjoining the Forest of Wolves. Start your journey to find the Red Loong, begin at the “Outside the Forest” Shrine, then take the left-hand path. After that, when you reach the chest, take another left.
Cross the river past the two Wolf Scouts and at once turn left again to head over to a well-hidden slope leading into a new part of the river with a giant waterfall. As you approach the waterfall, if you have the Loong Scale in your inventory, you’ll receive a prompt to interact with the waterfall once you’re close enough.
The waterfall will disappear once you interact with it, allowing you to pass through the crack in the stone beyond. This will load a new boss arena where you will face The Red Loong.
Despite being a Chapter 1 boss, the lightning-infused Red Loong scales with Chapter 2 in terms of power. You’ll need the skills you gain in Chapter 2 to defeat it. Target the vessels on the Red Loong’s back when it stumbles to deal massive damage, significantly shortening the fight.
If you cannot crack the wall, you can use the Wandering Wight Spirit. You can use the tremendous power of a mighty headbutt to access the area and find the Loong Scales in the golden chest. It’s worth mentioning that I couldn’t test the Azure Dust Transformation Spell from the Man-In-Stone Merchant, but it’s another possible way to get through.
